If you are the artist type and love to sketch, draw and paint you probably have tons of finished pieces of artwork lying all over your home. If you haven’t ventured out into the world of sculpting clay, now would be the perfect time. There could be nothing more unique that creating your very own picture frames to hold your own pieces of artwork. Think of all the comments and praise that you would receive when your guests notice two pieces of art in one. When you create your own piece of artwork it can be difficult to find just the right frame in which to place the piece. If you make your own picture frames you will not have that problem again.

Making a picture frame from clay is one of the easiest pieces to put together. You could make a basic rectangle frame with straight edges and simply paint the piece with beautiful colors. Or if you wanted to make more of a statement you could create a more dramatic edge to your frame altogether. Just because most of the picture frames that you see in the stores have straight edges it doesn’t mean that that is what you are limited to. Another great thing about making your own picture frames is that while you won’t have a piece of glass readily available to put in the frame you won’t really need it anyway. Actually the best way to frame your pictures and artwork is to not use a piece of glass anyway. This will prevent the picture from sticking to the glass in the long run. Also, if you do create a piece of artwork that is not generally a square or rectangle it would be easy for you to make a frame that is round or whatever shape your artwork happens to be and then put it in the ceramic kilns to finish it off.

So if you are rather artistic and are looking for a great way to frame your pieces of artwork, creating your own frames is the best way to go. Not only will your piece of art that you are framing be a fabulous piece of art, but so will the frame that the picture is resting in. There are many different ways to work with clay that are more difficult, like centering on the potter’s wheel.
